Lisbon in the rain is slippery calçada and an empty viewpoint. A tile painting workshop in Graça solves the afternoon: you sit indoors for about an hour, everyone paints their own azulejo, the tiles are fired overnight and you collect them the next day. It is 45€ per person, it works from about five years old, and the atelier is inside a Portuguese wine and gourmet shop, which gives the adults a plan B.
Why rain is the right day for it
Everything you came to Lisbon for is outdoors. The miradouros, the tram, Alfama, Belém. In the rain they are all worse, and the queue for anything indoors doubles by eleven in the morning.
A workshop is booked, so there is no queue, and it fills the exact hole rain leaves in a family day: something to do, sitting down, with a result at the end of it. The Tram 28 stop is five flat minutes away, so nobody has to be dragged up the hill in the wet.
Take the 15:00 slot on a wet day. Mornings you can usually still get out and do something. Afternoons are when a family runs out of ideas.
What the children actually do
Everyone gets a tile, a brush and real mineral pigments, not felt tips. An artist shows the table the majolica technique and then leaves people to it. There is no template you have to follow, so you can copy a traditional Lisbon pattern or paint a dinosaur. Children paint a dinosaur.
It works from about five. Younger than that and the session outlasts the attention span, which helps nobody. One tile takes around an hour, two around 1h30, and the second tile is usually where a child gets good, because they have stopped being careful.
The tiles go in the kiln overnight and come out glazed and hard. Each person collects their own the next day. A tile with your seven-year-old’s handwriting on the back survives a house move. The fridge magnet does not.
Or: they paint, you taste wine
You do not have to paint. You can book the session for the children and stay nearby, and nearby is the honest word. The artist guides the painting, but supervising your children is on you.
The convenient part is where nearby happens to be. The atelier is inside POP, a Portuguese wine and gourmet shop at the same address. Wine, cheese, fish cans. You sit a few metres from the table with a glass of something Portuguese while they paint, and workshop participants get 5% off, on the day and again when you come back for the tiles.
It is the rare family activity where nobody ends up waiting in a corridor.
Where you are, and how to get there wet
Rua da Senhora do Monte 38C, in Graça, on the hill above Alfama. Tram 28 to the Graça stop, then five minutes on the flat. Bus 737 and 794 also come up.
Do not walk up from Baixa in the rain. It is 15 to 20 minutes uphill and Lisbon’s limestone pavement turns into an ice rink. A taxi does it for a few euros. Tram 28 is worth knowing about on the way back too: from Graça you are near the top of the line, so you might actually get seats going down.
The Miradouro da Senhora do Monte is a minute from the door. If the sky clears while you are painting, that is where you go next.
Picking up the tile the next day
The tile is not ready the same afternoon, and that is the whole reason it is properly glazed rather than heat-pressed. Collection is the next day during shop hours, and allow 30 hours if you painted at 10:30.
That second trip is not a chore if you plan it, because there is a whole neighbourhood attached to it: read 24 hours in Graça. If your flight makes it impossible, we deliver to a hotel in central Lisbon for 20€, or 40€ to Cascais and Sintra.
Booking a family session
45€ per person for one tile, 50€ for two. All materials and artist’s guidance included, slots at 10:30 and 15:00 seven days a week, free cancellation up to 48 hours before. Sessions cap at 20 people and usually run at 8 to 12, so a family of four fits a standard slot without needing a private booking.
Questions we get asked
What is there to do in Lisbon with kids when it rains?
Indoor and booked beats indoor and queued. A tile painting workshop in Graça takes about an hour, works from age five, and ends with something each child made. The Oceanário and the tram are the other two answers, and both mean queueing in the wet.
How old do children need to be?
We do not recommend it under five. From five upwards, most children finish a tile happily inside an hour.
Can I book it just for my children?
Yes, but we are not responsible for supervising them, so you need to stay nearby. Most parents stay in the shop, which sells Portuguese wine and food and gives participants 5% off.
Do the children need any experience?
None. The artist guides every table and beginners get good results in an hour.
Can we all paint together?
Yes. Everyone sits at the same table and everyone paints their own tile. That is the normal booking.
When do we get the tiles?
The next day, after overnight firing. Or delivered to your Lisbon hotel for 20€ if you are leaving early.
